STEAM Education for Critical Consciousness: Discourses of Liberation and Social Change among Sixth-Grade Students

Abstract In this case study, we present opportunities science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics ( STEAM ) education provided to a sixth-grade class. We collected observational interview data in language arts science class over 1 year. used the liberation social psychology LSP framework understand students’ discourses discussions as they drew from engineering activities, ideas. Further, allowed us explore engagement critical reflection of social, racial, other discrimination. The analysis showed that promoted integration ideas, design, consciousness. found supported reflection, racism, discrimination Finally, argue Asia-Pacific Global South countries has be about consciousness, change, underrepresented groups immigrants for more inclusive, sociopolitically conscious, democratic experiences.
